Step back in time with this original Graterford Prison plan book from 1928. This historical document offers a rare, detailed look into one of Pennsylvania’s most significant correctional institutions.

Located in Skippack Township, near Philadelphia, Graterford Prison (officially known as the State Correctional Institution at Graterford) was constructed to replace the overcrowded and notorious Eastern State Penitentiary. Completed in 1929 and operational until its closure in 2018, Graterford was once the largest maximum-security prison in Pennsylvania.

This plan book was created by Zimmerman, Saxe & Zimmerman (architects from Chicago, Illinois) and showcases the original architectural blueprints and comprehensive descriptions of the prison’s form and function. It includes detailed layout maps of the cell blocks, administrative buildings, workshops, and recreational areas.

Beyond the physical structure, the book delves into the intended purpose behind each section of the facility, offering insights into the prison’s operational goals, from labor programs to inmate living conditions. It serves not only as an architectural artifact but also as a window into the social and penal ideologies of the time.

This RARE book is in great condition for being almost 100 years old, with all pages present and it is free from any markings or writing. There is a slight water stain on the top right of each page. Please see each picture to ascertain condition.
