Captured and processed by S.M. McClure

Captured October 1, 2023, at Bellefontaine Cemetery, St. Louis, Missouri.

In the shadowed heart of St. Louis’ Bellefontaine Cemetery lies the strange and haunting grave of Herman Luyties—a monument as macabre as it is mesmerizing. Behind a weathered glass pane stands the life-sized marble figure of a woman, forever encased, her pale form gazing out with a ghostly sorrow. Legend whispers that Luyties, a wealthy pharmacist, became obsessed with the model for this statue—a woman who rejected his advances and vanished from his life. Grief-stricken, he commissioned this eerie likeness, entombing her in stone and glass so she could never leave him again. The effect is chilling: a spectral bride sealed in her crypt, her face streaked by decades of condensation and decay. Visitors often say they feel watched, as if the marble woman’s mournful eyes follow them through the misty graveyard, a silent sentinel of love lost and madness immortalized.
