Phantasmagoria Photography Prints
Instantaneous Photographs of Things UnseenCaptured by S.M. McClure on August 16, 2025
at the abandoned Mid-Orange Correctional Facility in Warwick, NY.
This fine art photography print captures a haunting view of one of the overgrown cottages at the back of the former Mid-Orange Correctional Facility in Warwick, New York. Centered in the frame, the wide-open door gapes like an invitation, or a warning, while ivy and vines climb the weathered brick. The golden light of twilight glows just beyond the doorway, casting the cottage in a surreal and eerie contrast between decay and radiance. It is an image where nature reclaims what man has abandoned, and where beauty intertwines with a palpable sense of unease.
The Mid-Orange property began in 1932 as the New York State Training School for Boys, a reform institution that championed vocational training and rehabilitation, drawing praise from none other than Eleanor Roosevelt. By 1977, the site was transformed into a medium-security men’s prison, housing hundreds of inmates during the turbulent decades that followed. When the prison closed in 2011, its once-ordered grounds fell silent, and the cottages, dormitories, and cellblocks slowly surrendered to ruin and overgrowth. Today, while parts of the campus have been redeveloped, many structures like this cottage remain haunting testaments to its history.
Beyond the crumbling walls and overgrown facades, Mid-Orange has also become known for its paranormal activity. Investigators report disembodied voices near the cottages, footsteps echoing on empty paths, and doorways that seem to breathe with unseen energy. Many claim that these liminal spaces harbor restless spirits. Twilight visits often bring the most intense experiences, with sudden chills, knocks, and mysterious whispers caught on recording devices.
“Overgrowth” preserves that tension in striking detail. Ideal for collectors of abandoned building photography, admirers of haunted prison wall art, or anyone drawn to the strange beauty of places overtaken by time and nature, this print captures both the ghostly stillness and the golden glow of twilight. Printed on premium archival paper with rich, lasting inks, each piece comes with a certificate of authenticity from Phantasmagoria Antiques & Oddities.
