History:
Pennhurst State School and Hospital, located in Spring City, Pennsylvania, was established in 1908 as an institution for individuals with disabilities. Originally called the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the Feeble-Minded and Epileptic, it was meant to provide care and education but soon became overcrowded and underfunded. By the mid-20th century, reports of abuse, neglect, and inhumane conditions surfaced, leading to widespread controversy. In 1968, a documentary titled Suffer the Little Children exposed the horrific treatment of residents, sparking public outrage. This ultimately led to a landmark civil rights case (Halderman v. Pennhurst State School & Hospital) that contributed to its closure in 1987.
 
After its abandonment, Pennhurst became infamous for paranormal activity, drawing ghost hunters and investigators from around the world. Reports include disembodied voices, shadow figures, and objects moving on their own. Visitors have claimed to hear screams, crying, and whispers echoing through the empty halls.
 
One of the most chilling encounters involves the spirits of former residents, particularly children, who are said to laugh, tug on clothing, or appear in fleeting glimpses. Some investigators have recorded EVPs (electronic voice phenomena) with messages from beyond. Many believe the suffering and trauma that occurred within Pennhurst’s walls have left behind a strong spiritual imprint, making it one of the most haunted locations in the United States.
