Phantasmagoria Photography Prints
Instantaneous Photographs of Things Unseen

Captured by S.M. McClure on August 16, 2025
at the abandoned Mid-Orange Correctional Facility in Warwick, NY.

This fine art photography print captures the haunting threshold between abandonment and reclamation at the former Mid-Orange Correctional Facility in Warwick, New York. Taken from inside one of the cottages at the back of the property, the image looks outward through a weathered exit door. Inside, peeling paint clings desperately to the walls and rust creeps across the frame; outside, nature has taken hold, with tangled overgrowth spilling into the once-secure space. The contrast is stark yet beautiful—decay meeting renewal, confinement giving way to wild freedom. It is a visual reminder of how time reclaims even the strongest walls.

The Mid-Orange site has a long and unsettling history. Originally opened in 1932 as the New York State Training School for Boys, the institution was built on ideals of reform, with cottage-style dormitories and open land meant to offer troubled youth a chance at rehabilitation. In 1977, however, the property was converted into a medium-security prison, housing adult men during one of the most tumultuous eras of incarceration in New York State. By the time of its closure in 2011, the prison had witnessed decades of confinement, despair, and human struggle within its walls.

Since its abandonment, the facility has drawn ghost hunters and paranormal investigators from across the country. The cottages in particular are said to harbor unsettling energies, with visitors reporting phantom footsteps, slamming doors, and sudden chills near their exits. Some investigators claim to hear voices calling from just beyond the thresholds, as if the spirits of former inmates or staff are lingering in liminal spaces—trapped between the inside and the outside, the past and the present. Paranormal teams have recorded electronic voice phenomena, strange bangs, and even full apparitions near the very exits now choked with vines and shadows.

“Exit” preserves this eerie tension between man-made decay and the quiet persistence of nature. For collectors of abandoned building photography, admirers of haunted prison wall art, or those fascinated by the uneasy beauty of forgotten places, this print embodies both history and haunting in a single frame. Produced on premium archival paper with rich, lasting inks, each print comes with a certificate of authenticity from Phantasmagoria Antiques & Oddities.
